SEPA mandate reference: what it is and how to assign it

Last updated: 28 October 2026

The unique mandate reference (UMR) is the number under which a SEPA Direct Debit mandate is kept. The creditor assigns it; together with the creditor identifier it identifies every mandate unambiguously. It appears on the mandate, in the pre-notification and in every collection.

At a glance

  • Up to 35 characters: letters without accents, digits, space and / - ? : ( ) . , ' +.
  • No slash at the start or end and no two slashes in a row.
  • Upper and lower case are not distinguished: M-0412a and M-0412A are the same reference.
  • The creditor chooses it freely, uses it for one mandate only and provides it before the first collection at the latest.

Where to find the mandate reference

  • On the mandate. The mandate form has a field for the mandate reference. If it was not known when the mandate was signed, the creditor must provide it before the first collection.
  • In the pre-notification. Before each collection the creditor announces amount and due date, often on the invoice or in a payment schedule; the mandate reference and creditor identifier can appear there too.
  • On your bank statement. The mandate reference travels with every SEPA direct debit to your bank. German bank statements, for example, label it MREF and the creditor identifier CRED.

As the creditor, you find the mandate reference in your software with the mandate and, in the direct debit file, in the field MndtId, together with the signature date DtOfSgntr.

How to assign mandate references

  1. Choose a fixed scheme, for example the customer or member number plus a counter: C10023-01. A second mandate from the same customer gets C10023-02.
  2. Use each reference only once, and do not distinguish references by upper and lower case alone.
  3. Avoid spaces and special characters; letters, digits and hyphens are enough. Do not use the IBAN or personal data such as a date of birth.
  4. Copy the reference into the direct debit file exactly as it appears on the mandate. If you change your scheme later, indicate the amendment in the next collection and include the previous reference.

For new mandates you can use our free SEPA mandate template, which has a field for the mandate reference.

Mandate reference and creditor identifier

The mandate reference alone is not unique across SEPA: two creditors can use the same number. A mandate is identified by the combination of the creditor identifier and the mandate reference.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find my mandate reference?

On the mandate you signed, in the creditor's pre-notification, for example on the invoice, and in the details of each direct debit on your bank statement. If it is missing everywhere, ask the creditor.

How long can a mandate reference be?

Up to 35 characters.

Can I change a mandate reference later?

Yes, for example after you change your numbering. This is a mandate amendment: in the next collection you set the amendment indicator and include the previous mandate reference. Let the payer know as well.

Is the mandate reference the same as the customer number?

Not necessarily. You can base it on a customer or member number, but every mandate needs its own reference, even when the same customer signs a second mandate.

What happens if the mandate reference is missing or does not match the mandate?

The bank can return the direct debit, for example with reason code MD01 (no valid mandate). A collection without a mandate reference does not meet the SEPA rules; the free check shows such cases before you submit.
